Good afternoon families of Dr. E. W. Coffin School, 

We have some exciting science fair news to proudly share with our families.  Often science fair is delivered as a club and our grade 4/5 & 5/6 teachers decided to open this opportunity for all students.  This resulted in a fantastic Dr. EW Coffin Science Showcase.  This opportunity also prepared five teams for the Calgary Youth Science Fair on April 12/13, 2024 at the Olympic Oval.  All five teams earned medals, which was amazing.  Furthermore, one project earned the “Elementary Award” and another project earned the “Elementary Physical Science Award”.  Congratulations to the following students!  

We are proud of all our students that presented at our Dr. E.W. Coffin School Science Showcase and at the city level Science Fair. These students showed impressive teamwork skills as they improved their capacities to communicate clearly, listen actively, cooperate, work collaboratively to problem solve and negotiate conflict constructively, navigate different settings, provide leadership, and seek or offer help when needed. These are important life skills that we will continue working on with all our students.

PATs (Grade 6s only) 

Alberta Education has announced that Grade 6 English language arts and literature (ELAL) and mathematics provincial achievement tests will not be administered in the 2023/2024 school year. Alberta Education will instead offer field testing between April and June 2024. We will explore these optional field tests for Grade 6 English language arts and literature and mathematics and provide more information to parents when it becomes available.  It is important to note that Social Studies 6 (June 18, 2024) and Science 6 (June 19, 2024) PATs will still be administered for all Grade 6 CBE students in June 2024.
